Booker T. & The M.G.’s - Soul Limbo

While their best known song was “Green Onions”, as an Englishman, “Soul Limbo” was the track I knew first and it still has a special place in my heart. Growing up in the UK in the ’70s and ’80s, this was the soundtrack to my summer. On most weekends, whether outside playing in the garden or staying in due to adverse weather conditions, this song would come blaring out of the telly at around 2 pm. It was until the last few years the theme tune to The Cricket. It’s leather on willow, freshly cut grass, weak half-pints of shandy (beer and lemonade), sunburn, an afternoon nap, egg and cress sandwiches with the crusts cut off, a cup of tea, and scones. All in all, it evokes some the best feelings I have towards my childhood and also my homeland.

This has been the alarm on Nick’s phone for as long as I’ve known him. I think it’s the only song that will wake him up and get him out of bed without making him cranky.

Day made!
